Injured Murray out of Wimbledon
Murray injured his wrist in Hamburg last month
Great Britain's Andy Murray has pulled out of Wimbledon after failing to recover from a wrist injury.

Murray had left his decision to the last minute in order to give himself the best possible chance of playing.

But after an indoor session at Roehampton on Sunday the 20-year-old said he feared he would do further damage to his wrist if he played.

"The doctor has advised me not to play and that I probably need about 10 days to be ready," said Murray.

I love playing Wimbledon because of the great support I get from the British public and that is what I will miss the most

Andy Murray

"Unfortunately, I don't think it is going to rain for the next 10 days.

"I have done everything possible to get ready for Wimbledon. I have played practice sets the last few days but still cannot hit a top-spin forehand properly.

"It has been six weeks of really hard work but I'm not 100% ready."

Murray injured the wrist playing a routine forehand in an event in Hamburg in the middle of May.

It was soon apparent that he would not be fit for the French Open but he retained hopes of being able to complete at Wimbledon.

His wrist still had not healed in time for him to play in any of the traditional Wimbledon warm-up events but he remained optimistic of being fit right up until Sunday when he announced his withdrawal.

"The wrist is a very important part of tennis and there are a number of players who have made the decision to come back too soon and ended up with long-term injuries," added Murray.

"I do not want to take the risk and make the same mistake.

"I love playing Wimbledon because of the great support I get from the British public and that is what I will miss the most."

Tim Henman's Wimbledon dream lives on after he finally overcame Carlos Moya in their delayed first-round match at Wimbledon on Tuesday.

The players resumed at 5-5 in the final set after bad light had halted their match late on Monday evening.

It was another nail-biting affair as the first 13 games went with serve.

But Moya eventually double-faulted on Henman's seventh match point to allow the 32-year-old Briton a famous 6-3 1-6 5-7 6-2 13-11 victory.

Four-time semi-finalist Henman will now play another Spaniard in the second round in the shape of Feliciano Lopez, who beat Britain's Josh Goodall.

After the drama that had taken place on Monday evening, there was further tension for Henman's fans in a packed Centre Court on Tuesday.

Both players looked solid on serve until 30-year-old Moya earned two break points at 11-11.

British number two Henman saved both with terrific serves, including a second-serve ace on the latter.

In the following game, it was Moya's turn to struggle as he went 15-40 down after a clever lob from the Briton, who had failed to convert four match points on Monday evening.

He saved both and another but finally cracked on the seventh, tamely handing victory to Henman, who had fought back from a break down earlier in the final set.

It also ensured the Briton avoided his first first-round defeat since his Wimbledon debut 13 years ago.

Afterwards, Henman said his twilight heroics on Monday evening had been the turning point.

"The key was coming back from 2-4 and 15-40 down in the fifth set. I stuck to my guns to hold serve then broke back to get back on level terms.

"I have to give Carlos credit for coming out and serving and volleying like he did. If I'd lost, on reflection I could have accepted it because he played so well."

He also paid tribute to the Centre Court crowd. "They were fantastic," he said.

"It's obviously different without the roof, but the atmosphere is second to none and the support I've had has always been incredible and I use it to my advantage."

If anyone other than me is interested:

Murray powers into quarter-finals

Murray is the number two seed in Moscow
Britain's Andy Murray beat Lukas Dlouhy 6-2 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the St Petersburg Open.
The second seed, who had been boosted by top seed Nikolay Davydenko's earlier defeat, broke his Czech opponent in the first game of a one-sided first set.

Murray, 20, was three games down in the second but fought back to seal victory.

Murray needs to win the tournament to keep alive his slim hopes of qualifying for the Masters Cup and will meet fifth seed Dmitry Tursunov in the last eight.

The Scot's path to the title was made easier when the Croatian Marin Cilic stunned home favourite Davydenko 1-6 7-5 6-1.

The top eight players in the ATP Champions Race earn places at the Masters Cup in Shanghai.

Murray lies 18th, 48 points behind the player in eighth.

Earlier, Murray's brother Jamie and Australian Jordan Kerr slipped to a quarter-final doubles loss - 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-3) - at the Lyon Grand Prix

Uh-oh...
Seems he's quite in trouble eh?

I don't have the slightest idea of the ATP ranking nowadays! laugh.gif
Tracey D
you have to finish top 10 i think to enter the masters race (although BBC say top 8, but i always thought it was top 10), and Andy probably won't, due to the injury and not playing for months!
Anyz

We suck! laugh.gif

All of the guys are out of the tournament now! sad.gif
Tracey D
Andy made the semi-finals laugh.gif
Anyz
Yay! Good for Andy! biggrin.gif

I've been so 'unplugged' from tennis lately! XD

I used to watch sports a great part of the day, but I don't have much free time nowadays! sad.gif

But what I know is that David Nalbandian (Argentina) is not dating Victoria Vanucci (former tennis player and now she's an 'actrees' let's say) laugh.gif
Tracey D
I try and keep up with what's going on but sometimes I have no clue what's going on!

Anyway congrats Andy Murray:

Andy Murray eased to his third ATP title with a 6-2 6-3 win over Fernando Verdasco in the St Petersburg Open.
The 20-year-old Scot never allowed his Spanish opponent to settle, breaking in games three and seven as he took the opening set without breaking sweat.

And although Murray produced only rare flashes of brilliance, he managed to break twice more to clinch victory.

It lifted him to 11th in the ATP Race and boosted his chances of making the end-of-season Masters Cup in Shanghai.

He is now just three points behind Tommy Haas in the eighth and final qualifying spot with only one ranking event - the Masters Series in Paris - to play.

But he is likely to face stiffer tests in France than Verdasco provided in a low-quality clash, although Murray was by no means the main culprit.

Right from the start Verdasco looked nervous and incapable of establishing any consistency with his main weapon, the forehand.

World number 16 Murray's first-serve percentage never got beyond the low 40s but it mattered little as his gameplan of keeping his opponent on the backhand side produced rich dividends.

Three wild swings from Verdasco were followed by Murray's brilliant cross-court forehand to effectively settle the outcome of the first set in the seventh game.

And with the world number 30's forehand completely in disarray Murray completed a sequence of five straight games to go 2-0 up in the second.

Verdasco's problems seemed to be affecting the British second seed and the contest developed a pattern of booming forehands and deft drop-shots mixed with a host of unforced errors.

Three more mistakes provided Murray two match-points and a final netted forehand brought an untidy encounter to an end.

Anyz
Congraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaats Andy! laugh.gif

*uncorks bottle of champagne* biggrin.gif

huh.gif

Tis the second bottle I uncork! laugh.gif
And I plan to keep uncorking more! wink.gif

Tracey D
British number one Andy Murray kept his Masters Cup hopes alive by beating Fabrice Santoro to reach the Paris Masters quarter-finals on Thursday.

Murray, 20, breezed past French veteran Santoro 6-4 6-2 and next faces either Richard Gasquet or James Blake.

Only the top eight players in the ATP Race qualify for the season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai.

The young Scot, who began the week 11th in the standings, is chasing one of the two remaining places.

"Santoro is one of my favourite players to watch," he said afterwards. "I won't see a style like his for the rest of my career.

I don't feel like there's as much pressure on me as on the other guys

Andy Murray
"I felt like I was in a rhythm. I'd got used to Centre Court and played well."

Although Fernando Gonzalez is a long way ahead at seventh in the Race, Murray - who won his third career title in St Petersburg on Sunday - was only three points behind Tommy Haas in the eighth and last qualifying spot at the start of the week.

Gasquet, Blake, Mikhail Youzhny, Guillermo Canas, Fernando Gonzalez, Tomas Berdych and Marcos Baghdatis are also still in contention for the final two places.

Murray's win saw him, at least temporarily, climb into eighth place on 51 points, with Haas still to play on Thursday and David Nalbandian dropping out of contention.

"I don't feel like there's as much pressure on me as on the other guys," he added.

"In fact, it's getting easier because players are falling away as the tournament goes on. I've just got to keep winning."

Certainly, Murray's task on Thursday was made easier by Santoro upsetting Novak Djokovic in the previous round.

Santoro, 14 years Murray's senior, found his armoury of fiendish angles and delicate touches outclassed by the shot-making wizardry of his younger opponent.

Santoro immediately broke back after Murray took the lead in the third game, but had no reply when the British number went 4-3 ahead on his way to clinching the first set.

Murray had little trouble in the second, racing to a 4-0 lead before finally sealing the match four games later.

looks like he may do it after all! go andy!
Anyz
Hey Tray, do you like Andy?

Bringing this back up since i know there's a few of us tennis fans around!

Tom, I like Federer but Wimbledon is starting to get really predicable these days, and I would like to see Nadal win. Nadal played well at Queens. Although I still like a few of the other players like Roddick and Hewitt.
Val
When is Wimbledon anyway?
t0mmazzy
Roddick is great ..I have the opportunity to see live Moya, Saffin, Monflis ...etc..two years ago..at 'Estoril Open' and i had the opportunity to be with them...was great to be face to face with the players.. I have to tell you something..it was a joy see Moya playing...he was great!
In Portugal i live in a zone very turistic we have good beach, a great climate, tennis, Golf , great girls tongue.gif ..and last year...i was at the beach and i have seen Mcnroe just a few steps next to me....AMAZING...he participate in a thing here in Vale do Lobo called 'Gran Champions' that's the great names of tennis... like Mcnroe...i have been at the Semi-final two years ago too.. I have seen Mcnroe, Pat Cash, Rios, Tom 'Machine' and other great players... Last year I have missed this thing cause...I have been working and then i have gone to Paris three weeks..!

Val.. I think Wimbledon starts in 23rd June and the Final is 6th July :\

Tracey D
Oh my, Djokovic is out of Wimbledon in Round 2!! That wasn't expected!

Andy Murray did well yesterday, and of course Federer and Nadal are still in! Mind you Nadal took a while to settle in yesterday.
t0mmazzy
yes i know....I haven't seen any game yet..sad.gif
Tracey D
Federer won easily again today but so did Murray yesterday!

Roddick is out now too, the seeds are dropping like flies!

t0mmazzy
it+s being interesting ?
Val
Ohhh Wimbledon wub.gif

Looks like Murray might lose today ... he's 2 sets down to Gasquet.

Ancic FINALLY got through earlier (he beat Verdasco) and is playing Federer on Wednesday mellow.gif
Tracey D
Well, I thought he had lost it, so much so I stopped watching for 10 mins....but he won!!!

God, Andy Murray really needs to stop doing what Henman did to us for all that time laugh.gif

But he is now a 2008 Wimbledon Quarter Finalist, yeah!

The Ancic, Federder match should be good too.

A shame all these players are meeting before the Semi's though.
t0mmazzy
OOOOOH I want to cry tongue.gif
Tracey D
I almost can't believe Nadal won Wimbledon but by playing These Are The Days over the closing titles of the BBC's coverage on Wimbledon actually just made my day! laugh.gif
t0mmazzy
Are you kidding me ? these are the days ? ohmy.gif
Val
Yup yup indeed!! biggrin.gif

t0mmazzy
It's one of the most popular Jamie's songs
Tracey D
The US open starts next week!
t0mmazzy
finally i need action tongue.gif
Tracey D
Murray is through to Round 2 and Nadal!

The problem being that some of the games are on way too late at night!
Val
I see they're both through again.

If the Williams sisters get through to the quarter finals, they'll face each other!
Tracey D
So mostly the usual suspects are through to the last 16, in the mens anyway.

Although I have noticed the draw has been in Nadal's favour, and I wish Murray wasn't in his side of the draw!

I was watching some of the Tsonga match around midnight UK time and they were saying he had never played a 5 set match before (i haven't checked how it ended yet) but that surely means he has no chance, even Federer and Nadal do that (well against each other more than not!).

Ivanocis going out in the women's was a shock, although I think many players are tired from the Olympics. Hence why I am now convinced Murray delibrately dropped out of the Olympics!

and it does seem like the Williams sisters will do well and one of them might win, but i want Jankovic to win.
