First big story of the season today... & what a shocker!!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
QUOTE
Andy Murray will face Lleyton Hewitt in the final of the SAP Open in San Jose' after beating Andy Roddick in the last four.

Murray overcame defending champion and world number three Andy Roddick 7-5, 7-5.

Roddick had looked the more comfortable on his serve in the opening set until Murray showed impeccable timing to break him in the 11th game.

Murray looked on course for victory after breaking Roddick again in the fifth game of the second set, only for Roddick to break back immediately.

However, Murray struck once more at 5-5 and then held his nerve in a thrilling final game to wrap up victory.

The Scot knows that Hewitt will provide another tough test for him, and said: "I will probably have to play my best match to beat him.

"He is a double Grand Slam champion, he is in the top 10 of the world and I don't think he has dropped a set this week and he is playing pretty well, but I'm going to go out and try to play one of my best matches."

GO ANDY!!! biggrin.gif

So who is your all-time tennis hero? Mine was always Boris Becker... when he first came on the tennis scene, I was in my teens & was the reason I started playing tennis myself... I had a mad crush on him & was ecstatic when he won Wimbledon!!! biggrin.gif

He was just 17 when he won Wimbledon! biggrin.gif

Andy Murray has such a promising career in front of him... last year was huge for him, especially Wimbledon (being his first major tournament & getting as far as he did)... he is going to be the UK's 'yes' man, where as Tim Henman was always the 'yeah... well, maybe' man. biggrin.gif

Tim was good for the sport in this country, but I think it is time for him to step down & let Andy Murray do the business!!! biggrin.gif

Andrew Murray's debut ATP Tour victory has moved him into the world's top 50 for the first time.
The 18-year-old Scot moved up 13 places to 47th in the latest rankings after beating third seed Lleyton Hewitt 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 to land the SAP Open in San Jose yesterday, having beaten top seed Andy Roddick in the semis.

Murray needed three match points to subdue Hewitt, but played a terrific tiebreak, winning it 7-3 when he blasted a backhand crosscourt winner to become the youngest Briton in the Open era to capture an ATP title.

On sealing victory, he yelled out, pumped his fist and wrapped himself in a British flag given to him by a fan. "This is perfect," Murray admitted afterwards. "I played solid all week. It's been the best week of my life."

It was his second ATP Tour final after losing to world number one Roger Federer in Bangkok last October.

Murray is now in sight of Greg Rusedski (43) and Tim Henman (40) in the battle to be the sport's top-ranked Briton.

... mmmm... nice! wub.gif

ACCORDING TO SWEDISH DAILY Pim-Pim sustained another injury to his arm and will be out for a couple of weeks. He has already pulled out of Memphis and will most likely skip the first two Masters Series events in Indian Wells and Miami.

Andy Murray will move into the world's top 40 when the ATP rankings are published tomorrow - just as the Sunday Telegraph predicted early last October - while Tim Henman will slip behind Greg Rusedski. The new young British No 1 has got there by his own efforts, but another changing of the guard behind the scenes will hopefully ensure that there are more Andy Murrays to follow him.

It would seem the 18-year-old Scot, so obviously a child of the new millennium, has been an inspiration to not merely the young in Britain - not to mention young lovers - but also the old blazers and buffers at the Lawn Tennis Association. Suddenly there seems to be a collective will to improve Britain's dire tennis fortunes. It was almost as if the appointment last week of a dynamic new chief executive at the LTA had been inspired by Murray's heroics in the United States the previous week.

Well done, Andy... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

From CBS Sportsline...

Andre Agassi will return to tennis at Queen's Club in June following a back injury that has sidelined him since March.

Agassi, an eight-time Grand Slam champion who turned 36 last Saturday, decided to skip the clay-court season so he won't miss Wimbledon for a third straight year.

"The wear and tear of the clay-court season is something that has set me back in the past in terms of the grass-court season, and the grass is something that I don't want to miss again," Agassi said Monday.

Agassi withdrew from Wimbledon in 2004 because of a hip injury, and last year when he aggravated a sciatic nerve in his back at the French Open. He has not played since Indian Wells in California in March and has played only seven matches this year.

Queen's, the major Wimbledon tuneup from June 12-18, also will feature No. 2 ranked Rafael Nadal, defending champion Andy Roddick, three-time winner Lleyton Hewitt and top-10 players Ivan Ljubicic, James Blake and Nikolay Davydenko.

Britain’s three leading players, Andy Murray, Greg Rusedski and Tim Henman, are also in the field. Murray, the British No 1, will be hoping that the back injury that has forced him to withdraw from this week’s Estoril Open has cleared up.

Murray, 18, needs to regain fitness for back-to-back Masters Series tournaments this month in Rome and Hamburg. The Scot, who has dropped a place to No 44 in the world rankings, is believed to have suffered the back problem during last week’s clay-court tournament in Barcelona.

From BBC Online Sport...
Lleyton Hewitt won the Stella Artois Championships at Queen's Club for the fourth time with victory over James Blake today, Sunday.

Hewitt also defeated Tim Henman in the semi finals yesterday... Blake knocked out Andy Roddick.

The Australian, who was champion between 2000 and 2002, was always in control as he came through 6-4 6-4.

It is Hewitt's 25th careeer title and his first since Sydney in January 2005.

"It's fantastic to win here again," he told BBC Sport. "I always love playing here and it does a whole heap for the confidence going into Wimbledon."

The 25-year-old was straight out of the blocks, breaking Blake twice in the American's first three service games.

Blake overcame his edgy opening to claw back one of the breaks but could not prevent Hewitt from taking the first set.

The players matched each other at the beginning of the second set although Blake could not find a way past Hewitt's solid retrieving and began hitting more errors in his efforts to hit the lines.

Hewitt cranked up the pressure to break in the seventh game, which was enough to see the Australian claim the title.

"It's the first title I've won since getting married last year and also since having (daughter) Mia so it means a lot to all of us," said Hewitt, who joins John McEnroe and Boris Becker as the only men to win four Stella Artois titles.

Blake had grown increasingly frustrated with himself during the match but said afterwards that he was satisfied with the way he was playing.

"I've learned a lot about grass-court tennis this week and more today. I hope I can take it into Wimbledon," he said.

I'll be quite honest here, Tracey & say I didn't watch either.. went to the cinema with Luke instead! laugh.gif

Tracey D
I'm not really a football fan, always prefer tennis smile.gif

Wimbledon will always have a place in my memory, especially 2001.. I was in hospital, waiting to have Luke... we sat in the hospital ward, huddled round a small TV & watched the men's final with all the windows open & the air-conditioning on full blast because it was so damn hot!!! biggrin.gif

That was the year Goran Ivanisevic entered the competition as a wild-card entry... & ended up winning the whole thing... best match ever!!! biggrin.gif

There is a good preview of this year's competition on the official Wimbledon site. smile.gif

The fun begins on 26th June, with the mens final scheduled for the 9th July. smile.gif

Andrew Murray has booked his place in the second round of the Nottingham Open but only after surviving a major pre-Wimbledon injury scare.

The 19-year-old from Dunblane produced a much-improved display to beat number five seed Dmitry Tursunov 6-4 6-3.

But the British number two required on-court medical assistance as the first set was reaching its climax after going over on his right ankle as he attempted to make an awkward backhand.

The teenager initially appeared in pain as he lay on the ground but he eventually managed to get to his feet and limp back to his chair before receiving medical assistance for five minutes.

And Murray said after sealing his first-round victory over the Russian number five seed Dmitry Tursunov: "I slipped and felt my Achilles tendon jar. The first thing you think when you fall over is 'oh God, I hope that is not my ankle gone', and I thought it was bad at first.

"You can kind of tell 20 to 30 seconds after if it is bad because the pain is pretty sharp. But after the 30 seconds I felt I could probably carry on, and right now it just feels like it is bruised... I'll now take stock in the morning."

Number one seed and former Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson yesterday described the centre court at Nottingham as "dangerous" following his first-round defeat at the hands of Jan Vacek.

It was on the same court Andy's older brother Jamie sustained a knee injury during their doubles game yesterday, although the 20-year-old later insisted the turf was not to blame.
Tracey D
My mum was saying she thinks Andy Murrary has got the wrong attitude at the moment and that's why he won't win a grand slam anytime soon, that he's too cocky and a bit too immature to when it comes to arguing with umpires etc!
Starbuck
I agree, Tracey.. he got in a right strop when he crashed out of the Stella.. he will have to change if he stands a chance at Wimbledon. sad.gif
Tracey D
doesn't he keep sacking his coaches too? if he wants to be a good player he needs to work on that attitude!
Tracey D
ohhh yay Wimbledon smile.gif
