A thread for the older set

Some time ago Saint100 had started the "If Jamie survives..."-thread in the "Not just the music"-part of PN. It is a discussion about what will happen when Jamie will get older, will we still love him and so on. Everybody who posted there assured to love Jamie forever independent from his age. What else?
But much more interesting was that there was a lot conversation between forumites, who already have reached a slightly higher age, about the special feeling what you have when you're fond of a guy who could be your son It was a very special discussion and I enjoyed it very much, a kind of morbid fun.
As "Not just the music" is not meant for chatting and quite a few of us would like to continue the chat with contemporaries I've decided to open a new thread.
Of course everybody else is invited to post here if you can contribute something to the running conversation, but please don't alienate it with other chat - there are other chat-threads in the neighbourhood.

Well, I start with a question: What do you think Jamie's thinking about older fans waiting for him after a gig? I remember an interview where he said that he likes stalkers as long as they are "young and hot".

Edit: I forgot to mention that I've stolen the title from Jazzione, who created it in "If Jamie survives". So she has deserved the title "His Favourite Auntie #1" NOW and FOREVER!!!
The subtitle was created by Lawrence - thanks!

Well too bad if he doesn't like the "aunties" hanging around afterwards, we're just showing our how much we like him and his music. (hope I'm not too young to be here of course rolleyes.gif )

Some time ago on "Top of the Pops Reloaded" Fern Britton visited and interviewed Jamie at a gig and he told this story about a beautiful young woman coming up to him and looking at him so adoringly saying: "My mum loves your music so much". It was a bit of a bummer for Jamie ...

Jamie has been a guest quite a few times on the French music television show "Traffic". This is a rather odd but oh so French program, meaning everyone speaks French and those who do not master the language are dubbed (by the same voice!) - so it's quite hilarious. Everyone who's non-francophone has to listen to the conversation with an earpiece and simultaneous translation. Well there was this French singer (I can't remember his name) who gave a rather wacking performance and later explained what the song was all about. It was a story about a 70-year old lady who had a secret 23-year male lover in a little French town and it was based on true events. I just noticed Jamie's eyebrows arcing upwards, but he wasn't allowed a reaction to this statement-song. Too bad!

So I think he goes for "hot and young", but that doesn't mean we can't go for it too. Anna Karenina lived in the 19th century if I'm not mistaken, so why should all the men snap up pretty young ladies. Can't really deny that I'm sometimes checking out young men on the bus myself. wink.gif
flechesbleues
well he does sing that he likes his women older wink.gif

...I guess at only 9 days older I don't really qualify rolleyes.gif

(and certainly couldn't logically be either his mother or his aunt... would you mind if I joined you sometimes as an adoptive niece? unsure.gif )

Haven't you seen Jamie at "Anke late night", Hobbitlady? One of his first shows in German TV. Anke (40) was constantly flirting with him and was nearly offering him a place on her lap (she was just split with her ex, an author, about 12 years younger than her). Then she got a slight of her mind back and said "OMG Jamie, I could be your mother" - and he ,with a glance at her boobs sad only "hopefully" (I thought "naughty little bugger"...and this was my initial moment seeing Jamie as someone with some sex appeal, before I only liked his pianoplaying), then Jamie was flirting with Susan Sarandon in that other show....
So I think elder women can have a certain attraction for him. But that doesn't mean that they have an attraction only because they are older....

I could imagine that he curses the day sometimes, surrounded by mummsy stalkers, when he wrote the line down, that he likes his women older laugh.gif laugh.gif
I think it's quite simple, your not automatically "hot" when your are young, but you aren't either when you are older than 30 rolleyes.gif

It's the same when guys admit to like "curvey" women... you can be sure they are all rather talking about Jennifer Lopez, than about Anna Nicole Smith in her heaviest time. cool.gif

I’ve never waited after a gig, but that’s all going to change a week from tonight so I’ll let you know. I did queue up once to meet him at a CD signing. All I can say is he was incredibly gracious and he made me feel very welcome.
I got a harsh bite of reality last night when a younger man offered me his seat on the subway. That had never happened before and it came as quite a jolt. Someone saw me as being old enough to warrant surrendering their seat. Ouch! But, I digress…
Let’s be honest, what young man wouldn’t prefer eye candy at a meet and greet? This isn’t an occasion for solving world problems. But, as long as he keeps smiling, I’ll keep showing up even though Scarlett Johansson I’m not.
PS: I hope I’m welcome at the “Auntie Club”. Some dear friends refer to me as “Mad Aunt Ida”…but that’s a story for another time…

What an interesting topic, and it has certainly made me smile. I admit to being 44 and only slightly embarrassed when I think of the "virtual stalking" I've been doing. The fact is that when I think of Jamie, I don't feel 44. I was never this crazy about a musician when I was twenty-something.

GREAT idea, Hobbitlady - thanks for the thread!

Well, I'm probably the oldest one here (don't ask HOW old because I just won't tell you), and I have to say that I really believe Jamie is being sincere when he greets me quite warmly and fondly after a gig - I've been to many, so he's come to recognize me. I don't think he's just being polite - and if he is, he's one hell of an actor, because he certainly seems sincere. And what the hell, I'll go with that - it gives ME great pleasure to chat with him afterwards, so I'm not going to worry about it - I plan to just keep going for it!

Well OF COURSE he goes for "hot and young"! And he's honest enough to admit that - in some interview somewhere, he was asked what he looks for in a woman, and he was forthright enough to admit that the first thing he notices is looks. Doesn't mean he doesn't appreciate our appreciation of him! He may not drool at the sight of us, but that doesn't mean he doesn't like us at all! (And Sadie, NEVER stop appreciating the young men on the bus...older men have been looking at younger women for years. We get a turn, too!)

You're welcome here too, FB. We'll adopt you. (I remember the first time I heard that now-famous line from Popstar: my first thought was, How MUCH older? LOL!!! Until I realized he probably meant 30, not "Mummy!"

I get the impression that Jamie is generally comfortable with older women - he was even a tiny bit flirty with me on one occasion; I didn't make anything of it, of course - probably just the mood he happened to be in that day. Still, it was fun, while totally harmless. Perhaps - this is just a guess, now - he's comfortable with older women sort of the way some women - myself included - are comfortable with gay men: you can flirt and joke around, but the possibility of actual sex is pretty much out of the question, so yuou can just relax and have a laugh. I wonder if that's kind of how Jamie sees us. (It's not terribly important to me - I really do believe Jamie's sincerity when he's spoken to me, and that's all I really want.)

Oh, Jeez, Bronx, that DOES hurt...ouch indeed! I've had that happen once or twice and wanted to deck the little bastard who said it - and was too proud to take the damn seat, too, fool that I am! laugh.gif

Hi Jazzo and FB! Good to see you here! Of course you're welcome! smile.gif (As mods you should know what it means to stay on topic tongue.gif wink.gif )
@Lawrence: Of course you're welcome as well! We have a lack of males on PN - so we urgently need your input! biggrin.gif
Jamie: Finally it's really up to him, which kind of women he prefers and that doesn't mainly depend on age. In the Blender interview he said that Isabella is a few years older than him - so we can't complain! wink.gif
The line in "I wanna be a popstar" goes: No teenage girl when show is over, I prefer my women older; so he probably wanted to say that he's not that kind of those a****les taking kids with them to their hotel rooms for a one-night-stand.
I've met him twice now, but both times it was much too hectic to have a real chat (Danny standing behind him: "One signature each!") and I must have been far too nervous to think about how to approach him. So it was a little bit weird. Maybe he is a kinda confused by women behaving like a teenager, who could actually be his mother - I suppose, He'd never expect his own mother to behave like this! *blushes*
Well, it comforts me that with 45 I'd be a quite young mother. biggrin.gif - My own kids are only 14 and 16.

btw The French song reminds me of "Harold and Maude", Sadie! rolleyes.gif
Do you remember what you promised to ask him, MMK?

Um...guess I've forgotten...PM me, OK? (Although I probably have it saved somewhere...)

Curious: what do you mean about "women behaving like a teenager..."? What were you doing that makes you think you were behaving alike a teenager? I know that for myself, when I talk to Jamie, I'm just me - not censoring my behavior or worrying that I'm not being "age appropriate." Unless you were giggling and shrieking, I doubt you were acting like a kid (with all due apologies to any younger people who might happen to be reading this - I'm NOT saying ALL of you act like that!).

It was a jolt for me as well, when young men were starting to ask me if they could help me with my suitcase. rolleyes.gif But Ì'm travelling very much by train for my profession and have quite heavy suitcases, so I appreciate this very much in the meantime. biggrin.gif
But it really sucks when other Jamie fans start to say "Sie" instead of "Du" after you have jumped around with them on a Jamie-gig. angry.gif (That's a very polite way to characterize somebody as "old")

Okay all of you out there.....I am the official Favorite Auntie. You see that way you can think he is very happy to see you and always will be and the fact that you are old enough to be an aunt to him of course you want to be his favorite one. Then it is okay to hang about.

Poor Danny....I chat him up because we are much closer in age. And I pm'd Marc and no he won't be coming to the states. sad.gif

I can also admit that with all the other shows I have been to only jazz musicians are accessible after a show.
Why is that? And very pleasant.

I love that this thread was started with that title....See MMK it is not so bad is it????

At my last gig when Jamie called for a "Bloody Stage Invasion" as my son called it.....I was standing in front of the stage....well I could not resist his request.....so I pushed my son's girlfriend who was standing with me up onto the stage...I told her she had to go up there because she is an absolutely gorgeous blonde just a bit younger than Jamie....and she and I just love Jamie...she really respects his musical abilities.... Okay so then we were both up there....

Anyhow the next day I was totally depressed and told my husband, I would never have as much fun as I had at the show ever again. That when Jamie came back I would be too old to get on stage...that I should not have done it..... He said no dear....you can jump on stage .... it is when you stop doing that, that you will be old. God Bless that man.

In terms of British English vs. American English, I've noticed that what pretty much dictates which is used is the nationality of the person writing. I naturally use American spelling, and in fact I'd feel phony and pretentious doing anything else, but they're not all THAT different from each other, just a letter or two here and there, and I don't think it makes a bit of difference which you use.

Did you originally spell the TITLE of the thread without the "u" in "favourite"? I naturally didn't notice. (Reminds me of a scene in an old movie - anyone remember Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange"? [Well, we're all old enough to, anyway!] There was a scene with a bunch of hooligans speeding recklessly down a highway at night, and it took me quite a number of viewings to realize that the primary terror in the scene was that not only were they speeding, but they were actually driving on the wrong side of the road: the story takes place in England, and they were driving in the right-hand lane - which looked perfectly normal to me, of course.)

Funny cartoon, Hobbitlady - that was exactly what I was envisioning - and I'm not quiter ready for that category just yet!

Kirjava, I agree, but I'd word it even more decisively: I am 100% sure Jamie doesn't mind his more mature fans waiting around after gigs - I'm absolutely positive. Somewhere else I told the story about how he greeted me at the Saratoga gig last June - about how he was looking down at the table where he was seated to sign autographs, and my turn came, and I said hi, so he looked up, saw it was me, exclaimed, "Oh, HI!!!!," jumped up, and gave me a hug and a little kiss, and then we had a nice long chat and some laughs.

Anyone who has the slightest doubt, or feels at all awkward or like they might be out of place waiting to have a moment with Jamie, I wish I could make you cut it out. Just stop it! We're fans. Age has nothing to do with it. And Jamie appreciates his fans - ALL of us.

I like the "Auntie Atroi"....sound to it.......but to be quite honest...I would never ever wait for Jamie after a gig ( as I would always have the feeling that he must have had enough of fans lurking after him... wink.gif ph34r.gif )

12, I think.

Just stop it! We're fans. Age has nothing to do with it. And Jamie appreciates his fans - ALL of us.

Couldn't agree more MMK.......and in my experience that's the attitude I get from the younger fellow fans too.......they're only too happy to chat to me...... we're all just fans wink.gif

MMK:

Well, I'm probably the oldest one here (don't ask HOW old because I just won't tell you), and I have to say that I really believe Jamie is being sincere when he greets me quite warmly and fondly after a gig - I've been to many, so he's come to recognize me. I don't think he's just being polite - and if he is, he's one hell of an actor, because he certainly seems sincere. And what the hell, I'll go with that - it gives ME great pleasure to chat with him afterwards, so I'm not going to worry about it - I plan to just keep going for it!

(hope I'm not too young to be here of course rolleyes.gif )

No, you're welcome...I THINK... laugh.gif (not quite sure how to take that question, Jazzo! laugh.gif)

The fact is that when I think of Jamie, I don't feel 44. I was never this crazy about a musician when I was twenty-something.

Same here. Never felt this way about a celebrity before in my life.

Not trying to be insulting at ALL. And to my college friends kids I'm Aunty Hillary (only child, so no "real" nieces or nephews) so I guess I'm qualified. Though I think of myself as old enough to be Jamie's much older sister.

Ditto on the never felt this way about a celeb issue. I skipped that phase in teens and twenties for some reason. A few guys whose TV shows I always had to watch religiously, but not to the point I sought out pics, articles, face-to-face meeting, etc.

Depends on the gig. At Fort Lauderdale, there were only a handful of fans waiting, and for a while, I was the one person waiting by the tour bus; New York next week will be 180 degrees around from that. It's up to you, of course, but I know I've found meeting Jamie such a terrific and joyful experience, I wouldn't trade it for the world.

And Jamie is really, really welcoming and easy to talk to.

We all don't feel like meeting people sometimes, and it must be like that for Jamie. But the four times I have had the opportunity to meet and chat to him have all been very rewarding. He always wants to know your name, where you come from, where you got your T-shirt from etc etc - he always seems very interested, and I don't think he is putting that on.............mind you, depending on the gig, you may have to wait....and wait for him.......now was that 2 and a half hours after the gig at Delamere........ rolleyes.gif but he always comes out, in my experience.

Hm with the sick humour I meant more Brinky wink.gif But you'll never know what you might find out about yourself - when you're staying in this thread ph34r.gif ohmy.gif wink.gif

Not meeting Jamie?! ohmy.gif Are you're planning to go to a gig in November? I'll be in Berlin! I'd love to stalk with you together! I'm very, very sure that he'd be very, very disappointed if there were no fans waiting for him. biggrin.gif
And: This question was only for provoking a discussion. rolleyes.gif (and it worked biggrin.gif tongue.gif ) Of course I know he's appreciating every single one of us. I mean this is not about whom he'll take to the hotel room afterwards ph34r.gif
But the number of fans does obviously make a difference. When there are too many there's no time for a relaxed chat and he will hardly be able to remember you later. So I'm still waiting for a chance. smile.gif

Not always! He did not in Copenhagen (where he left immediately for meeting a friend) and in Thetford as far as I know. And as I said there's obviously not always the time for a chat. But it's always worthwhile to wait anyway. smile.gif

Same here. I've met the coolest people at Jamie gigs, of ALL ages. I never feel an age barrier. That's one of the really cool things about Jamie's audiences, that they ARE so mixed. I've even seen young children once or twice, and particularly in Philadelphia, there were a fair number of people who appeared to be over 70. On line before gigs, and afterwards hanging out together waiting for Jamie, no one seems to care about anyone's age at all. After my first gig in NY last autumn, I was chatting with some 15-year-old girls - well, I could almost have been their grandmother, let alone mother, but it seemed the most natural thing in the world. Jamie attracts some very interesting fans, in my experience.

Loving this thread!

And sometimes he's prevented from meeting his fans...like in Atlantic City, where the hotel personnel apparently hustled the guys off to a private bar right after the show... dry.gif

I get the impression that in the U.S., the crowds waiting afterwards are generally not as large as in the U.K. or Europe; so far, whenever I've waited for Jamie, there haven't been more than maybe 20 or 25 people waiting, tops, often fewer (except for Saratoga, where it was a line waiting for autographs). That does leave more time for each fan to have a bit of a chat.

I think it's going to be far, far more people at Roseland next Friday, though...I think I myself know at at least 20 people going, counting all the forumites. Going to be different, that's for sure!

Agree with that too biggrin.gif
.....and that is some of the same reason why this Forum works so well as a "community" - one common interest, but lots of different interests too: this usually makes for good conversation when talking to other fans when waiting for Jamie smile.gif

Great thread !

In Bonn and Hamburg I've estimated around 30. unsure.gif Bonn was my very first time meeting him, plus it was my 45th bd, plus it was sooo hot that day (the weather wink.gif ), I suppose I was far too nervous to stay calm. rolleyes.gif And in Hamburg it started to rain when he came out and the tour bus was already waiting - everything a bit hectic. Probably it's also better when he has time to stay overnight after a gig.

Nope, I still don't like it! laugh.gif (Not a deal-breaker, though.) "Auntie" conjures up for me the image of someone's ditzy old relative, unruly strands escaping from her gray bun as she rocks on the front porch, knitting over-large socks none of her nephews want to wear but are too polite to refuse! UGH!!!!! No, THANKS!!!

knitting ain't JUST knitting anymore ph34r.gif Better to keep that activity as far as I,m concerned...once the knitting is gone.... ph34r.gif

I've always liked you, Brinks. You know that! Truly a woman after my own heart!

Good night, you bunch! Looking forward to lots of fun here!

Good! Cause sometimes I feel more like a pround auntie than a fainting fangirl. Although, the people at work might disagree considering the scene I made in the lab the other day. ph34r.gif What? Jamie never gets radio-play here anymore. I heard "Photograph" on one of the college stations and went into complete hysterics.

Anyway, I'm barging in.
