I know that it is a little to early to be taling about this and for that I am sorry. The shop that I work at all ready has Christmas item up. To me Christmas is a very special time of year. All of my family gets together around this time. We have such a great time together. I love them and this time of year.
The thing that really makes Christmas special is Christmas eve. We all gather at my Aunts house and eat, sing and watch movies all day long. Then in the evening we all go to church. Then go back to my Aunts and start to sing for Santa. The reason that we do it is so Santa can bring us a gift that night. The funny thing about this is that all the grandchildren are above the age of 15. We open one gift and then go caroling around the neighborhood.
That is my Christmas tradition what are so of yours???????
Carol
well my family tradition changes every Christmas.

as we are a big family one year we celebrate Christmas on the 24th December. we have a big table with food (but we don't eat turkey) and all the family is there chatting and laughing. when it's midnight the younger members of the family go to one of the bedrooms and open their presents and the older family members stay on the living room.

on the following here we celebrate Christmas on the 25th December afternoon. we also have the big table with food, but it is something more lighter.

on the 24th December I always have a dinner with my father's part of the family. my uncles invite some family friends and they appear as they can because they also have Christmas parties with their families. After midnight we open our presents.

at home my brother and my mother kind of lost the Christmas tree tradition since we never open presents at our house. we just put some lights on the windows.

I love to walk on the city by this time of the year smile.gif
Pato
Well in my house is a little bit like Carolīs. The 24th is my uncleīs birthday so we have a double celebration, weīre a small family only 6 now, we have dinner at home anf then we go to terrace to see all the fireworks. Thereīs plenty of food, my mom cooks and my uncle bring some food as well, so we have food for 20 laugh.gif

On the 25th we have lunch together too, and we ate the leftovers.

We donīt but presents, thatīs not a tradition in our family, but it is the christmass tree and decarate the house, inside and outside, as much as we can (we live on a second floor, so itīs difficult to put the lights on).

Here in Argentina is normal, for young people, to go out after midnight and get together with friends and go to have some drinks or go dancing; but I donīt do that sad.gif tho Iīd like to do it sometime wink.gif
Carol
well on my mother's part of the family we are about 20...so we have a lot of food! tongue.gif

I guess Christmas is going to be tough for me and my family this year, but Christmas is my favourite time of year.

I think traditions may now change, but I will still try and enjoy the holiday season.

I will still make sure the decorations and tree are put up and i think i'll be doing all the Chritsmas present shopping now (well dad will have to buy mine himself hehe).

Christmas day will be odd, but at the moment I think we are still thinking of having the traditonal christmas dinner and later go to a relatives house.

I know one major difference of course will be going up to the cemetary on xmas day, which might be tough. I hope we can still enjoy the time though, i doubt mum would want us to be unhappy!

Boxing Day (the day after Christmas day day here in the UK) we normally go to my dad's side of the damily, so i'm sure we'll still do that too.

last Christmas it was tough for me too.
but since I have a big family, when I was/am with them I simply enjoy that special time.

I guess is more difficult if I am just with my mother and my brother. I get kind of nostalgic and I search for old pics...

Hold in there, ok dear?

xx

Well in my family we always do the same thing for Christmas.
My mom likes to make homemade macaroni and cheese on Christmas Eve.
And then after that she lets me and my two brothers each open one present from them.
Then on Christmas we usually go to a relatives house, but this year, Christmas is going to be at our house.
We eat dinner and then sit around and give each other presents and what not.
It's a lot of fun because I love being with my family and I love Christmas.

Anyways, can someone tell me what Box Day is??
imsmanu81
I am glad to hear about everyones holidays. I have always wonder what others do.
Pato
I want to know what else is Boxing Day, what people do, etc etc wink.gif

And Tray I know that it would be hard for you, for me too because Iīll miss my grandmother who past away last january, but itīs like you said, we donīt have to be sad, just happy to remember them in a happy way smile.gif
Tracey D
I think the UK must be one of the the only places where Boxing Day is a holiday too...and to be honest most people don't really know what it's about, including me! (i have been told but can't remember...i'll go look it up!)

Right from Wikipedia (so it may not be entirely accurate!)

Boxing Day is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, as well as many other members of the Commonwealth of Nations. It is based on the tradition of giving gifts to the less fortunate members of society.

It is usually celebrated on 26 December, the day after Christmas Day, but its associated public holiday can be moved to the next weekday if 26 December is a Saturday or Sunday. The movement of Boxing Day varies between countries.

Boxing Day is a traditional celebration dating back to the Middle Ages, of which the primary practice is the giving of gifts to employees or to people in a lower social class. The name has numerous folk etymologies.

A Christmas box is, in English tradition, a clay box used in artisan shops. Apprentices, masters, visitors, customers, and others would put donations of money into the box, like a piggy bank, and then, after Christmas, the box would be shattered and all the contents shared among the workers of the shop. Thus, masters and customers could donate bonuses to the workers anonymously, and the employees could average their wages. The habit of breaking the Christmas box lent its name to Boxing Day. The term "Christmas box" now refers generally to a gift or pay bonus given to workers.

Boxing Day is a holiday of particularly British origin, but in many other countries worldwide, 26 December is also a holiday under various names. St. Stephen's Day also falls on 26 December in the Western Church.

It was the day when people would give a present or Christmas box to those who had worked for them throughout the year.

In England many years ago, it was common practice for the servants to carry boxes to their employers when they arrived for their day's work on the day after Christmas. Their employers would then put coins in the boxes as special end-of-year gifts. This can be compared with the modern day concept of Christmas bonuses. The servants carried boxes for the coins, hence the name Boxing Day.

United Kingdom
It is common to spend the day with family members or friends as a sort of 'second' Christmas Day, where presents may be exchanged, the left-overs of the previous day are eaten or another family meal is prepared in celebration. (this happen with my family, we always go to my dad's side of the family and drink, eat and play games).

Australia and New Zealand
Boxing Day is a day when stores launch one of the year's biggest sales. Boxing Day has become so important for retailers that they often extend it to New Year's Eve. Some Australian states—including New South Wales—are tightening restrictions on Boxing Day retail trading[11], deferring the post-Christmas sales to 27 December. (Just to point out this is the same as in the UK too, although alot of stores will stay shut on Boxing Day and open the day after, but more and more stores now open on Boxing Day....i feel a bit sorry for the staff!)

Boxing Day is not officially observed in South Australia; instead a public holiday called Proclamation Day is observed on what would have been the next working day after Christmas.[12] However, it is still referred to as Boxing Day.

In Australia, Boxing Day has become a significant sporting day (similar to ANZAC Day celebrations). In Melbourne the Boxing Day Test Match is played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, often before the largest single day crowd of the Australian cricket season. In Sydney, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race starts on Boxing Day. (again very similar to the UK, nearly every football team will play on Boxing Day)

In Canada, Boxing Day is observed as a holiday, except in some cases for those in the retail business. Boxing Day and the days immediately following are when many retail stores sell their Christmas and retired model products by holding clearance sales. (again similar in the UK)

Sorry for the really really long post hehe

and Pato, I do intend to try and make it a happy day, being sad won't help anyone.

I honestly don't like it. I prefer the classic ones...
Tracey D
They do look a bit weird!

And not very traditional but I guess some people must like them or they wouldn't sell them...

Did everyone open their advent calendars today?
imsmanu81
I have noticed that as I get older I am holding onto my family tradition more. I found myself last night at work watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas. That is something in my family that we do to bring in the Christmas season.
Tracey D
Well my tree and decorations are up and I've got a fair bit of my xmas shopping done!
Tracey D
I hope everyone has a very good Christmas tomorrow!!

I had a wonderful Christmas this year. It would have been better if I were not so sick. I still got to see my family and recieved wonderful gifts. Hope that everyone had a Great Christmas. Happy New Year too.
AngelaE8654
One tradition that my family has ALWAYS had and my husband thinks is very weird is we always had a birthday cake for Jesus on Christmas Day. We also had rice pudding for breakfast that had one nut in it. Whoever got the nut got a prize. We always did the "Christmas thing" on Christmas morning, but when my aunt died at age 14, my grandma's family changed it to Christmas Eve.
Tracey D
Hi Angela, welcome to the forums.

The birthday cake is a nice idea.

I know alot of us celebrate christmas as a non-religious fesitval these days but it's lovely some people still stick to the traditional side smile.gif
aaceresrobinar
Many of our Christmas customs began long before Jesus was born. They came from earlier festivals which had nothing to do with the Christian church. Long time ago people had mid-winter festivals when the days were shortest and the sunlight weakest. They believed that their ceremonies would give the sun back its power. The Romans, for example, held the festival of Saturnalia around 25 December. They decorated their homes with evergreens to remind them of Saturn, their harvest god, to return the following spring.

I can not wait for Christmas!!!! I know that it is super early but I can not wait. I really love this time of year because I get to see all of my family.
Tracey D
Am I the only one who can't understand people who start their christmas shopping now?!

It spolis the fun of shopping in the atmosphere of Christmas!
michelle254
I always like to have started thinking of what to get people by now and if I can, start buying too. I hate leaving it all to the last minute and feeling the stress of running around shops.
Phoenix
according to Triff, theres only 62 sleeps left to Christmas, now, who raised this thread up so early wink.gif Personally, Christmas is important to me as im a Christian, but all the commerical stuff upsets me terribly and thinking about presents brings me out in a cold sweat..........
Tracey D
I'm not exactly religious but I view Christmas more as a time to spend with family. I do however object to Christmas starting too early!

I never buy presents until December.
imsmanu81
I have to sadly report that I have all ready started my Christmas shopping. I have a big family and usually do not start to shop until Dec. but there is no way that I could pass buying the gifts.
michelle254
I've just given my sister my xmas present list unsure.gif

Not as creative but I've got the mother of a friend that does her an advent calendar every year in a structure in woods with drawers where she puts little presents, chocolates, little words...

Love the idea

We have similar thing in the shape of a cloth snowman with little pockets. Small things like chocolate coins can be put into the pockets, but sometimes ,for larger items, I leave a little message - or have even started a treasure hunt with a message and several clues! I'll be doing that with the hat, scarf and gloves I've got over 3 of the days ...... Sometimes the messages are instructions for Christmas makes ...once it was a recipe for cookies to then hang in the tree! Yes, very versatile ....... biggrin.gif

Well i'm 24 and still have an advent calendar hehe Not opened today's yet!

My co-workers attacked our office with decorations today!

I like the idea of a treasure hunt.
I'll probably keep the idea for my nephew that is in his pirate period, with treasure maps...
