27th October 2005 - Portsmouth Guildhall - UK

Jamie was absolutely brilliant at the gig last night at Portsmouth Guildhall. He really got involved with the crowd, singing from the audience with Geoff on the bass, sitting in the audience to watch an amazing instrumental set from Geoff and Seb and then getting some of us girlies up on stage at the end of the night to dance away with him while he sang his final song. Jamie sang a great mix of songs from his new album, Catching Tales, and previous albums. My personal favourite was 'Oh God', which Jamie sang with such passion. Really brought a tear to my eye. He didn't fail to impress with his unique 'piano-percussion', a great visual mix of his video for 'Get your Way' and a carnival style piece with drums. The support act, BB Belle, were very good. The lead singer had an amazing voice, although the dance moves were a bit questionable! I think this added to their appeal though - you couldn't keep your eyes off of them. Highlight of my night was meeting Jamie after the show at the back stage door, getting his autograph and a kiss! I can't wait to watch Jamie perform live again. He has so much energy on stage and always gives us a night to remember. Suzie x

What a brilliant gig! Jamie is so talented and works so hard, he's quite amazing - and appeals to such a wide age range too. Being of a certain age myself I have seen a few great entertainers, but he's the most versatile and just the best! His band are really good too. Hope he comes back soon.

We had a great evening. Your support band were exciting and different. What a voice she has! And then you and the boys. This was our first time seeing you live. You are all very talented and give a superb, exciting, evenings entertainment. And the fact that you are prepared to come back on and stretch the time made us all feel that you wanted, not had to be, there. You must have been told so many times, but I really believe that your natural talent + your search for new material and the way you perform standards means you are building a place in this country's musical history. You have just gained a couple of sincere new fans. Well done Jamie.

If you haven't already bought tickets for this latest tour, I suggest you find your nearest venue and book fast. This gig ROCKS. You can look forward to an eclectic mix of standards and Jamie's own compositions, presented with such passion and commitment that you will not want the concert to end. Jamie put so much into it at 'Pompey' that I was slightly concerned he might be in danger of 'burn out' before the tour ends! He certainly holds nothing back in the performance, and nobody at the Guildhall went home disappointed on Thursday. For those not sitting near the front, don't worry, there are 'big screens' with tasteful B/W close up shots (in fact he looked better on the screen in black and white than in the flesh I thought!)so you won't miss a thing. Jamie interacted well with the lively audience, and this made it feel unique - there seemed to be no inflexible 'set format' or rigid timing - that's how it felt anyway. There were some 'interesting' interjections from fellow crowd members, but Jamie was completely unphased by this and revealed that he has a sharp wit, bags of confidence and a great sense of humour generally. He is a true entertainer as well as an all round truly gifted musician - GENIUS. Not only this, but he seems to be refreshingly without ego, and was generous in ensuring the recognition of fellow band members. The Norwegian support band were excellent (although listening in the bar during the interval, it seemed that not everyone agreed with me!) Unfortunately, I feel that they may lose out on a few sales, as there seemed to be no merchandise on sale (I didn't see it if there was) from either Jamie or the support band. Incidentally, if like me you enjoyed them, and want to look them up on the net, their name is 'BEADY BELLE' (sounded like 'Beanie Belle' when they were referred to at the gig). This name was difficult to hear and it took some investigating on my part to track them down and try to order an album! If you're into jazz/funk/ambient, you'll enjoy them. I'm not sure if they are the support at every gig. Well, enjoy the concert if you're going. I had such a good time that I've booked to 'Catch His Tale' again in January at the BIC! Have fun, Kathy x

Jamie succedded in 'jazzing that bitch up' tonight. On form, well and truly. No-one could have left disappointed. I myself am still buzzing from the high (and the gig was 3 days ago!) The support act, Beady Belle, provided a awe-inspiring warm up. By God, that girl can sing (and I stole some of her moves for my following Friday night. Needless to say-I pulled.) I can, without pretence, say that I left feeling up, due to the performances; down, because it's disgusting that people should have so much talent, and finally, amused, due to the 'Bob' obsessed man. Say it once: mildly amusing; twice: ah-ha; thrice: you're a fool! (dear Lord, shut-up. It's really not funny.) Jamie- you rock! And I know that it was said enough during the night (not by me I might add, 'cause I don't have the balls and I feel I am too old to say it)- 'We love you.' But you know that. Great music, great atmosphere, bitchin' evening in all. In my own words: 'The shiznay. Provided by the meisters of the industry.' I sound like a tit. It was good.

I have to admit I was wondering what to expect - my husband's got the albums and been talking JC up for ages but I wasn't so sure. Now after an awesome 2 hour performance I'm hooked and I've been playing Catching Tales ever since- 'Oh God' is a favourite. Amazing night, great visuals and fantastic band with everything from laid back sounds to full on brazillian drum beats! Audience interaction was great too with Jamie performing in the crowd and also inviting people to join him on stage at the end. Pete says thanks for the Guinness Jamie!!! Looking forward to Bournemouth now...!

Kick ass! Jamie and the boys were ON FORM tonight. I walked away on air. The music was electric, equally, the performance. My second live Cullum experience showed the development that has occured over the past 16 months. Last year I was left breathless for more- tonight it was delivered and I had seconds. Any Jamie vigin must have been left converted from the atmosphere of adreniline and passion- it couldn't help but be contagious. The itch to dance was, thankfully, scratched in the end, with all social decorum leaving your mind. It was all about the music (bar the 'Bob' fanatic) and the insights into inspiration only made it better. I think I'd still be dancing now if the evening had never ended. Muy bien!

(Post Script to the review I wrote after this gig in Portsmouth last week.) Just to say that I am STILL 'on a high' and humming all the songs from the gig a week ago. JC tickets should be provided free on the NHS - probably more effective than Prozac!!! Nice one JC, thanks so much for what was a real party night. Please watch the champagne intake in Paris (January) as I'll be expecting great things at the BIC the following day....

Jamie was once again on top form. A great selection of songs taken from his last three albums, the new material sitting very happily with the older, better known tracks. Jamie's banter with the crowd was great fun, especially in the face of adversity during technical problems with his guitar before 'London Skies'. Another brilliant gig, can't wait to see him again.
