Jamie and Yamaha release Elements – a series of short films charting the birth of a piano

The films explore the process of building a Yamaha grand piano, and are divided into the elements of Earth, Fire, Water and Air. They deliver a compelling insight into Yamaha's philosophy of piano building. Whilst in Japan, Jamie and the video crew were granted access to factory zones previously reserved for Yamaha staff and business visitors only. The videos start with the selection of woods and continue through to the casting of the iron frame and the final toning and tuning of the pianos. Finally, Jamie is seen in performance at a sell out show at Orchard Hall in Tokyo, putting the spotlight on the finished instrument.

This unique footage gives an insight into the passion and skills of the people involved in all aspects of Yamaha grand piano production. The narrative throughout is provided by the craftsmen and craftswomen – artists in their own right, and just as important in the life of the instruments as the famous artists who eventually perform on them.

Jamie comments, "The visit to the Yamaha factories made me appreciate that the people who produce these instruments for the artist are artists themselves. I'm sure there aren't many pianists who really appreciate the intensity of the processes involved in building a grand piano from raw materials and bringing it to the stage or shop. I'm delighted that the videos depict this with such beauty and passion."
