Wow!! I do not see how this young man can get better but he does each time. In 2006 in the Kursaal in San Sebastián Jamie filled the auditorium(just) with an audience of mostly more mature (and reserved) people. In 2010 the auditorium (1806 capacity) was sold out long before the concert and the age range had broadended considerably including some youngsters who had only just reached their tenth birthday. That gives an illustration of his appeal.
This time there were no curtain-raisers (and none were needed), no announcement (and none needed) just JC trotting out on to the stage and already provoking thunderous applause even before he started. From the first note he had the audience in his pocket - not like 2006 when he had to work hard to gain the audience. From that moment the atmosphere just got better and better. It is surplus to requirements to mention the numbers played since the set list is already published on the review page. Suffice it to say that the numbers chosen ensured the flow of the concert - fast to slow tempos and back again, each showing both his incredible pianistic and vocal range (something some artists can only dream about).
This was two hours of sheer pleasure all for an audience jumping, dancing, singing and clapping incessantly (when required)culminating (or should I say culluminating)with the encores "Wind Cries Mary" and the "Theme from Gran Torino" which brought the house down (almost literally). A really incredible performance and we cannot wait for his next visit.
Mention should not be forgotten for his backing quartet of Chris Hill, Tom Richards, Rory Simmons and Brad Webb who did an excellent job, as well as the video crew who brought the images to the audience not so close to the stage.
Find me on:
